Adopt-a-Classroom

Through the Adopt-a-Classroom program, humane agencies, civic groups, parents, and businesses "adopt" elementary-school classes by providing them with gift subscriptions to Humane Society United States Youth's award-winning classroom newspaper, KIND News. Since the program's inception in 1985, participants have provided KIND News to millions of schoolchildren, enhancing humane education throughout the country.

KIND News is aligned with National Education Standards for the major subject areas and is used by teachers across the curriculum. Schools’ renewed focus on character education makes KIND News an especially valuable resource for teachers.

Instilling Good Values

The articles, short stories, activities, and projects in KIND News teach children the importance of treating people, animals, and the environment with kindness and respect. The emphasis in KIND News on pet care, wildlife appreciation, and environmental conservation grabs students’ interest and makes abstract values like compassion, citizenship, and responsibility come alive. It also inspires many students to read.

Grooming Good Citizens

The projects, contests, and writing assignments in KIND News encourage young people to help one another and care for animals and the environment, helping to shape responsible citizens. Projects like donating clothing and toys, cleaning up parks, and collecting change for animal shelters enable children to become active, productive members of the community.
